CrossFit Drop-In Etiquette: How to Be a Great Guest While Traveling

Updated: Sep 1

As diehard CrossFitters, we love that our sport allows us to maintain our fitness routine even when we're away from home. Dropping into a local box while on vacation is a fantastic way to stay on track and meet like-minded people. However, it's essential to be mindful of proper etiquette when visiting a new gym. Here's how to be a great drop-in guest:

1. Do Your Research

Before showing up, check out the gym's website or social media pages. Look for:

  • Drop-in policies and fees

  • Class schedules

  • Any specific rules or requirements

2. Contact the Gym in Advance

  • Reach out via email or phone to let them know you're planning to drop in

  • Ask about their preferred payment method for drop-ins

  • Inquire about any waivers you need to fill out beforehand

3. Arrive Early

  • Give yourself plenty of time to complete any necessary paperwork

  • Introduce yourself to the coach and other members

  • Familiarize yourself with the gym layout

4. Be Prepared

  • Bring your own towel, water bottle, and any personal equipment you might need

  • Have cash on hand in case they don't accept cards for drop-in fees

5. Follow the Class Structure

  • Pay attention to the coach's instructions

  • Respect the gym's warm-up routine, even if it differs from what you're used to

  • Scale workouts as needed, but don't completely change the programming

6. Be Respectful of Equipment and Space

  • Return equipment to its proper place

  • Clean up after yourself, including wiping down equipment

  • Be aware of your space during workouts, especially in a crowded class

7. Engage with the Community

  • Be friendly and open to meeting new people

  • Share your home box's name and location if asked

  • Participate in any post-WOD social activities if invited

8. Show Gratitude

  • Thank the coach and staff for their hospitality

  • Consider purchasing some gym merchandise as a show of support

  • Leave a positive review or social media post if you had a great experience

9. Follow Up

  • If you made connections, consider adding new friends on social media

  • Invite them to drop in at your home box if they're ever in your area

Remember, as a drop-in, you're a guest in someone else's fitness home. By following these etiquette guidelines, you'll not only have a great workout but also contribute positively to the global CrossFit community. Safe travels and happy WODing!
