Here's How I'm Staying Young - at 61

Recently, a friend asked how I keep up my energy levels at 61. It made me reflect on the routines that have become part of my daily life. I thought I'd share a few of these habits, as they've really helped me maintain my health and attitude over the years.

Let's start with my passion: CrossFit. In 20I9, I became an owner of Stay Classy CrossFit, and it's been one of the best decisions of my life. I'm not just the owner; I'm right there in the thick of it, training 5-6 times a week. The constantly varied aspect of CrossFit keeps me engaged - one day I'm lifting heavy, the next I'm pushing cardio limits on a run or a row. It's intense, sure, but the results speak for themselves. It's the one thing that has had the biggest impact on my body composition. I love the community aspect too; there's nothing like the camaraderie you build when you're all pushing through a tough WOD together. CrossFit isn't just exercise for me; it's a lifestyle that keeps me feeling strong and vital.

While CrossFit keeps my body in shape, I've found that nurturing my creative side is crucial for keeping my mind sharp and engaged. Recently, I've taken up pottery, learning to throw on a wheel. It's a whole new world of creativity that I never expected to explore at this stage in my life. There's something meditative about centering the clay and shaping it with your hands. It's challenging in a completely different way from CrossFit - it requires patience, precision, and a gentle touch. I love how it exercises different parts of my brain, enhancing my focus and hand-eye coordination. Plus, there's an incredible sense of accomplishment when I finish a piece. It's not just about making bowls or vases; it's about continuous learning and embracing the joy of creating something with my own hands. This creative outlet provides a perfect balance to the physical intensity of CrossFit, keeping both my body and mind active and growing.

orking out with people in their 20s and 30s at the CrossFit gym keeps me feeling young. Their energy and drive push me to stay active and keep up, both physically and mentally. I like the challenge and the fresh perspectives they bring, and it helps me stay sharp. Plus, being around them reminds me of how I felt at their age, and I hope I can show them that staying fit and healthy doesn’t have to slow down as you get older.

That's my approach to staying healthy and engaged at 61. It's about finding a balance between physical activity, mental stimulation, and social connections. Age doesn't have to slow you down if you stay active in body and mind.
